From late March to early May, Japanese cherry trees(桜sakura) bloom all over Japan. The blossom forecast (桜前線 sakurazensen) is announced each year by the weather bureau, and a mantle of pale pink blossoms sweeps northward. In the Kanto region (関東) , Kawazu (河津) on the Izu Peninsula (伊豆半島) is famous for its early cherry blossoms (河津桜 kawazuzakura). In Kyoto (京都), the gardens of the Heian Shrine (平安神宮) contain weeping cherry trees (枝垂桜 shidarezakura) trained over bamboo frames. In the Gion district (祇園), floodlights allow the cherry blossoms to be viewed at night (夜桜 yozakura). At the Fuji Five Lakes region (富士五湖 fuji goko), photographers patiently wait to frame snow-capped Mt. Fuji (富士山 ) with a cherry blossom foreground.
